I have some questions and hope you guys can help me.

I usually play DE or Gnomish wizards and I was wondering what talents you guys pick? I go for Alert, Learned, Good Learner, Miser, Treasure Hunter, Potent Aura and Good Book Learner. What talents should I choose next?

If I learn SoA and book-cast once, so the spell's effectivity is 0, will it last as long as if I casted the spell first to gain some effectivity and then book-cast once?

I forgot some of the questions I wanted to ask, I'll post some more when I remember :D

effectiviness in spell helps with duration.

you really positive about good learner, learned and good book learner? wizards have good le anyway and affinity too books.

personnaly i would pick long stride somewhen. posiibly quick shot line if you plan using slaying ammo. book castings talents are worth to consider, but being wizard you should find enough spellbooks.

just my two rusty cents.

Well don't I need good learner for book learner? If the answer is no, I won't pick it anymore. Long stride is pretty cool, though.

Potent Aura - Charged? Isn't that worth taking?
You drop the golden ball.
You kick the golden ball. It slides to the west.
Suddenly Harry Potter, the apprentice wizard, appears! "That's not how you play Quidditch! are you even listening?"
Which direction? (123456789) 4
Harry Potter, the apprentice wizard, is hit by a bolt of acid! Harry Potter, the apprentice wizard, is annihilated.
You hear the ecstatic cries of a large crowd!

Dwarvish Paladin:

Miser->Treasure Hunter
Long Stride
Quick->Defensive Fighter->Dodger
shield specialist line->->->
Afterwards I would go for Mele Weapon Master to waste talents mostly.

another thing I might consider if I got Potent Aura somehow (potent aura is a starting talent):

Potent Aura->Charged
Potent Aura->Book Caster line (not for wizards)

I would not go Learned or book learner line (read guidebook). I don't know the magical Talents that well so I can't really say much more.

Get long-stride early or not at all.

I seem to recall that you can get potent aura any time, not just as a starting talent...

That's true. I almost never get Potent Aura as a starting talent. I usually go for the Learned talent because I hate getting 350 castings from a book...

350 castings is pretty good for what my Dwarvish Paladins do (they don't cast spells that much though).

With a High Elf or Gnomish wizard with 223-24 learning I usually get 800-900 castings, or more when born in a cup :D, and I like 900 more than 350 :/ especially since I find it very difficult to find spellbooks lately... Yesterday my lv 10 gnomish wizard hadn't found any books except a book of Darkness and one of Stun Ray.

I really don't like double posting, but I hate starting new threads and if I just edit my post above nobody will notice and my questions will go unanswered.

I love reading .flg's from the HoF, especially those that have an edited .flg and a story. There's lots of things to learn...

In one of them, the author wrote this:
"She took Thrundarr's holy symbol to the ID where she prayed for holy slayers until the gods ignored her."

Now why would she do that? What's the point?

Ah, well, this is extremely spoily, and personally I consider it to be a horribly dirty tactic, even worse than gremlin bombs.

There's a bug in the game (discovered through code-diving) so that if you have negative enough piety it loops round, and you'll end up with stupidly high piety. So if you do something to piss off the gods enough you'll end up extremely favoured. One way to do this is to keep praying, first causing the ground to rumble and later causing the god to get really annoyeed and summon holy/grey/black slayers. You can deal with these bad boys by running up and down the stairs in ID whenevber they're generated, or standing on a lone ice square in the barbarian's lake. Keep praying to piss off the god and eventually you'll end up looping the integer round and getting high piety, which can be used to get numerous pre/postcrowns.

ROFL, I've heard of the bug before, just never thought about doing it. That dirt sonofa... he got precrowned so easily :( I guess it was faster than saccing monsters.

Maybe you're right, that char prayed ~830 to get precrowned two times. But with a mindcrafter she could confuse them if they got too close. I'll have to try that one time, but I think it's too much trouble.

In my opinion it's exploiting a bug and cheating. If you want a precrown you should do it the hard way.

Its not holy/black slayers according to the GB. Solars and Ki'rins were mentioned there.

These are the correct summons

Spectres? I seem to remember holy slayer from my neutral god. (You can check, holy slayers are neutral), they can smash doors and surprise you on your first try with a wand of door creation in the ID... - acctually, they just surprised me ;)

Ok, need some help with my current char now. Very lucky in the beginning, found two RoDS in a shop.
Anyway, a lich king drained my St like crazy in the CoC graveyard. I'm a DE druid, with 29 St, 23 Le, 19 Wi, 27 Dx, 14 To and 34 Ma. 29 St with Executor and GoGS +13 (wish). I have 7LB's, but no offensive spells. So I'm lv 20, and I just looted Blup's mum apartment. She's pissed, but I covered the whole place in Darkness. It takes about 60 sec of constantly pressing the right arrow to get her to seriously wounded, and then she teleports away. Now I have to find a way to kill her, because I need some XP really fast. Already cleaned Darkforge (first time I don't get an artifact in there), the Tomb, Gremlin Cave, DD, UD, dwarven graveyard and the lower levels of the assassin guild. That lich king in the CoC graveyard really kicks ass, and I have only 1 Burning Hands castings left...
I have 41/23 while bloated on Normal tactics settings, 160 HP and 222 PP. While on berserk, I have +51 bonus to hit and 5d6+32 melee damage with Executor. Oh, I have lv 3 crossbows and 7 quarrels of dragon slaying. But I don't think I should use them, she'd probably blow me away in her first ranged attack. So what do I do? I really need the XP to level up a little, I have to do the Fire temple soon, it's already day 74. I've got 7 SoCR, 2 PoCC and the you are very light corruption. I'm hoping to get crowned really soon, I already sacced about 40k, the ACW, Black Torc, Big Punch and the Phial and still nothing.

Well, first of all you really need to improve your stats. I can't believe as a druid you haven't abused herbs :P Some morgia roots are vitally needed to get your toughness higher, and it wouldn't hurt to imrpove your Dex and Wi either. Your St without equipment on is 13? Well then you can easily get that higher just by taking the equipment off and walking around Strained. Eating the likes of giant corpses without the items equipped would also increase your strength. Otherwise the rest of your stats are fairly solid.

You could do with more DV too. Do you have a decent shield? What are your shield marks like? Do you have the Tactics skill to make your DV better on Coward? Any decent armour in DarkForge?

I'd say give up on the water dragon for now. She'd kill you outside of darkness, and you probably wouldn't hit her with your ammo anyway (train your crossbows more!) You may wish to try some wands on her though - acid and poison do decent damage when they're not shrugged off.

If you want xp then you might want to go for the Rift. You'll get spellbooks there too obviously. But for some offensive spells right now then the best thing to do is go to the ID. You should find a decent amount of spellbooks randomly without having to go to any dangerous or corrupting levels.

Can't understand why you wouldn't get crowned after saccing all those artifacts. Did you try praying? Are you the right alignment? Were you wearing Executor at the time? (can't get crowned if you're cursed or doomed)

Believe it or not, the only herbs I found were in the Big Room, and I don't like spending too much time there, the summoners are a pain in the a$$. But I'll give it a try, now that I have rings of invisibility. My St is so low because some monsters drained my St from 17... and I drank from some pools which didn't help. I got Lordly Might (SoA) fairly early, I usually carry around 9-10k stones of equipment with me, so I couldn't train it. I haven't met too many giants yet, I only got like 4 corpses from the Ogre cave.
I have lv8 in shields, and a medium crystal shield [+9, +4]. Except a white dragon scale mail, no decent armor in DarkForge. I have a black dragon scale mail, but it has the same stats: (-2, -4) [-2, +11].
I've already tried using a wand of poison on her while in Darkness, but I think she shrugged them off.
After I sacced the crown of science, my aligment went from N+ to L... so that was the reason. I wasn't wearing Executor or anything cursing. On the first level of the Assassin's Guild, a neutral altar was generated. I took off my Ring of Invisibility, and put on a ring of doom, but even after about 40 sacrifices I was still only very close (and when I sacced the first monster I was very close!), and I tried praying without the ring of doom, but no success.
I sold about 5k stones of weapons and armor in the HMV shop, but I only got 3k :( I sold some other junk in the shop in Dwarftown for 1k... I don't know where to sell my stuff now. I have 20k left and I really need a crowning, I'm eating food like crazy. Thank God for 7LB's.

I think I'll go to the ID, I'm thinking no deeper than ID10. I already saw quite a lot of vortices at ID5, and other nasty monsters.

Another question: What is the purpose of the amulet of cold heart? Why would anyone want to lower their charisma? That means higher shop prices when buying, right?

Saccing CoS brought you to L? Wowzers! To get a crowning you need 70 livesacs or about 100k gold. Alternatively about 70 blessed stomafillias would do the trick, or any combination of the 3. You might want to pacify the big room and spend some time farming herbs and training your stats.

I don't see why you're carrying around that much equipment - stop being a packrat and train your St a bit! Not sure why your food consumption is so high either. How many artifacts are you wearing, and are you actually wearing that ring of Invis constantly?

Corruption starts at ID10, so don't go deeper than 9. I'm pretty sure all spellbooks can be generated on ID1 anyway. Amulet of the cold heart gives cold resistance - pretty useless.

Well I died (big surprise there). I foolishly wanted to meet MaLaKaI, and got owned by a black unicorn on ID39. He was very experienced, I think, I managed to get him to moderately injured before he hit a critical and brought me from ~120 to -11. Nice. The only offensive spell I found was a book of Nether Bolt, I guess I was just unlucky. Lots of books of Bless and Cure [] Wounds.

I sacced the CoS in Dwarftown, I was at N+ and it brought me to L or LN, I don't remember. But my god cursed my inventory, so it doesn't matter. I was usually wearing the ankh, ring of invisibility, Executor and the Elemental Gauntlets. I carried that much junk around because I needed $$ to get a crowning and train with Garth. Ah well, I'll stop playing DE for a while.
A tip: If you get a ring shop generated on UD8, wait for it to restock lots of times. I found a RoDS in it, waited for it to restock and found another RoDS. Insane :)
