now i am playing hurtling necromancer who made some oaths: never wield shield, don't use weapons in melee and don't use any kind of comat magic - neither spells, nore offensive alchemy, wands, crystals etc.

thought should be chalenging but apperared not too much.

i basicaly got nonstop stream of spellbooks ending in nearly all noncombat spells. greater identify and wish are still missing:)
early precrown with whirlwind.
picked ironfist out of some zombie's pockets.

obviously DV is a problem so i'm looking forward to play with smithing. and i guess i'll have to use bridge building.

Does it count as combat magic if you're not using it for combat? Like using fire for cooking corpses and destroying webs. Also, are you keeping wands out of the question? Will be cool if you become good with the necro's Shadow Touch.

wands are definetly out of question.

so is combat magic in any form.
i already made discount to myself on wielding weapons becouse of smithing.

and cooking is out of problem. char is hurtling:) i'm more missing freezing water. especially one lake with hungry fishes...

p.s. very standard question what should i use RoDS for. Khelly is saved. 7Lb- four pairs. blue and red dragon scale mails, rings of ice all intersting spellbooks - all in posession.
since i'm not aiming at ultra keeping wish for late game doesn't sound reasonable.

i see two options - girdle of giant strength since i need bonus of to damage, or dodge skill which in the end could give me about extra 10DV on all scroll defenses/smithing efforts.
temporarily DV seems bigger problem.

Well, if DV is necessary Bug Temple could be done, provided your DV is good enough already, though I would wish the dodge skill, or better yet, take a chance of getting the dodge skill and find weakness by wishing for 'pairs of potion of education', but it'd be safter just wishing for the dodge skill.

What level are you anyway? I'm assuming you're around level 20-30 if you've gotten all that stuff already. Why don't you just build bridges for the lake, though if you are lacking strength+good bridge building skill it could take awhile....sounds like a neat char

Bug temple would be suicide. i can hardly squeeze 50DV on coward:( (well i actually can do more if shooting stunned nasty monsters while wielding halberd of defense for extra 18 DV, but it is so unfare)

wishing for pairs of potions is sort of funny. wishing for potions is enough to guarantee plurality and scrolls are better. they serve as sample for magical writing sets. i just happen to have none:(

lv21 and suck in bridge building. i guess playing with wands of monster creation/summon monster spell is better. a couple of ice vorteces could get the job done.

problem with girdle - it comes in singleton and gets destroyed in worst times possible.

problem with dodge -- i might wanna switch to pv line.

i've just got crazy idea. wishing for emperor moloch. after goblin bomb in DH i have reasonable amount of Daemon slaying ammo. which would mean easy level up + possible moloch armour for PV line (i think i would end with close tonegative DV on berserk but who cares). + i possibly could squeeze out a couple postcrowns with casino money. primary bypassing dwaven graveyard and high king tomb. there are some disadvantages. primary ACW is even worse then i enter this as LV50 char. and some other guys too (Earth temple springs to mind). and i think i might get problems with maxing my skills out.

on other hand having near 1k spell points in both magic map and teleport could let me bypass most of fights except orbs and d50. and if i somehow allow myself use wand of destruction on gate handles D50 could be done in style of teleporting guys away, luring balor from his place, pushing handle and destroying it.

must be hardest choice for RoDS in a long time.

I wouldn't risk the wish on EM - if it backfires you'll regret it. Dodge and GoGS are both good wishes. But how easily could you get Dodge to skill level 100? Personally I'd go with the girdle, I think.

Wait, you could wish for quickling bard in SMC,kill the Quickling Lords, and make yourself some beastly slaves. But it seems as if your actual char is weak so I guess that the stats/exp would be better...quite perplexing

I hate it when I have a wish and I don't know what to do with it, because I either:

Die while carrying it, even though I could've wished for something to prevent death...
Wish too hastily, and end up in a dire situation where I would've needed something from a wish

So in conclusion, I would advise NOT to use the wish, and save it for an IMMEDIATE emergency. Just make sure not to enter the water in water temple gathering rocks like me and drown while having a RoDS....stupid me

yeap i may die from one hit of GM.
and geting dodge early is whole point in maxing it out somewhen. basically it allows taking dodger so it is even more than 10DV in the end game.

so i went for dodge and have put some serious effort in smithing. now i reached 52/37 on normal. what is sort of bearable.

edit: being lucky bastard i got second RoDS. +12 strength really helps in killing stuff.

Yeah, you are a lucky bastard;D

So then the next wish would probably be something like SoCR(if you're chaotic)

What is your alignment anyways? Your restrictions didn't disprove of slaves, would be very helpful, because if you want even more DV, get one or two quickling lord skeletal warrior slaves, and they'll kill all the bugs for you easily, corpses for the taking. Of course if you don't have any morgia roots, then the temple is out of the question....wait, you really don't need Willpower do you, since you don't use spells I think...

I'm not really sure for what kind of char I should try for my next win, but I do know the following:

Play as completely fighter(no spells, except healing in a healer's instance)

No wish engine

Slay every monster:D

So I have the idea of doing an orcish(never have tried orcs before), char, since they have fast regenation. Either healer, barbarian, or assasin.
I'll be chaotic since I have to kill every monster, will miss out on jharod's ultra healing potions since I won't change alignment, or I could just forget the whole kill every monster thing...

my alignment used to be neutral.

luckily i didn't get crowned becouse i suspected that shadow touch drives straight into the chaos.

and i have done upper part of bug temple. just me and faithfull bow of hunting. speed is over 200 with RotMC and speedy coruption.

i didn't said i don't use spells. stun ray, darkness, invisibilty, strength of atlass... helps a lot.

p.s. and wishing for Dodge was rather stupid. skill refuses to go up at all...

edit: guess what i was crowned with... Vanquisher. second time ever. and no chance of using it.

Yeah, I expected you'd have that trouble with Dodge. Best way to train it is avoiding arrows from barbarians in the wildnerness - your PV will protect you fine.

As for Vanquisher, you could always use it as a missile weapon ;)

Congrats:D

If I were you, I would've just screw'd the challenge and use vanquisher, but of course that would defeat the purpose of the challenge now, wouldn't it:D

Would Vanquisher still have the same slaying capabilities as a missile weapon instead of a melee weapon?Would be good if you could somehow find multiple of the same artifact, but I would like Thunder Stroke and True Aim to come in packs of 3 at least....

Well, I've been letting fate decide for what race/class combo I'm going to try to win with next...dwarvish archer got pretty good.

I was just going to screw around, but turns out he did okay for messing around: I killed a couple dogs in wilderness, then killed Hotzy and gang for exp, then did Kranach, and Puppy cave too late, by 2 hours:(

Found orcish spear of devastation in orc vault.
Didn't get healing since I was screwing around
Went to D-town, got quests
Go down to spider vault, I ID stuff with Blessed SoI, and I have a RoDS!Accidentally type "red dragon" instead of 'red dragon scale mail' and got killed by it:( I was going to post this in untimely deaths, but I forgot to get memorial file. By far my dumbest death...

But now I'm trying drakelings, never have really tried them seriously before. Drakeling Priest works ok, going to try drakish wizard or drakish paladin too.

What would be the easiest drakeling class, besides healer?

Priest is what I'd say is best - tough, but good at magic, with doubly trained music to deal with cats. Drakelings make good mindcrafters too - the spit ability is extremely useful in the early game for dealing with nasties.

What should I do first in the game? What I've been trying is this:
Go to ID for a couple levels, also spellbooks.
Try to do Kranach provided I have offensive spells.
Get pickpockets
Go to PC/UD to go get blessed stethoscope and if I have healing spell, get PoUH from Jharod early.

But the main problem I have with Drakish Priests is that they just don't get good DV/PV, I never seem to find shields.
Should I just start in SMC and go to HMV in early game instead?

Well, equipment finds are a matter of luck. I tend to find there's better equipment in the druid dungeon than the village dungeon, but that means giving up on PoUH. Going straight to UD is risky, but if you feel strong enough then go ahead. I'd personally recommend getting some offensive spellbooks in the ID first, then going to the UD.

Boy, I'm not having much luck lately. I've given up on drakelings, don't really have any major strengths. So I've been trying gnomish mindcrafter, pretty good combo, stronger than elves, but still not strong.

My last one got to level 11, had done Kranach, killed Hotzy, and explored all of UD except UD:7, where Yriggs is. Well, I went down to the last level for the first time, and what do you know: a kobold chieftain/gray ooze tension room, blocking my way to next room. So I equip two shields and kick about 5 oozes dead, but used 1 prayer, and didn't even sac anything yet. So I run for stairs after gathering a hard girdle, and put it on upstairs...it was a cursed girdle of carrying! So, I waited for 2 days to consume all of my food, then went up to kill Hotzy and others for lots of cash to buy the scroll of uncursing in Barnabas' shop, and he was a gnome for once too! So I did that, went back, and got raped by the oozes....in retrospect, I shouldn't have wasted time wanting to eat all the food, I should've just dropped it, and I should've gone to puppy cave for some exp, then tried to kill the oozes with maybe a better weapon than my crude knife of might or broadsword...dang, this was my best mindcrafter too. I like gnomes since they can mine and have gemology, overall, gnomes are probably best race IMHO.But while I'm on the topic of best, what do you guys think is the best race or race/class combo?(Overall,an archmage doesn't count, wishes aside)

really depends on where you put stress on. early game or late.

still sort of wizard. possibly gnome.

but something like gray elven archer is very good both early and late game.

Well, I finished my mindcrafter and submitted it to HOF for the heck of it. Most of my characters aren't submitted and I've lost the flg files, so I might as well start trying to preserve them. It could take weeks for another HOF update, so I'll just throw my flg on here. I hope that's okay.

After a solid collection of wins, and about a year of not playing Adom, I
decided to come back and give it another shot. So far, after winning a game,
I've taken the winning races and classes out of my choices for the next game.
This left me with only two race choices - high elf and gray elf - which are
the same race anyway. I had always meant to try a mindcrafter, so I started
making gray elven mindcrafters, and sent them to their inevitable deaths.

My last four games were special endings, so I decided to just close the gate
as a simple change of pace. This would allow me to avoid all the constraints
that come with ultra endings: first kill pickiness, ordering and timing your
actions, alignment switches, a treasure trove of obscure items, exclusive
spear usage (though I always use them anyway), etc. However, in the end I
found that I actually prefer the structure that ultra endings force you to
follow. A regular game feels like playing in a sandbox, in that you're only
required to raid several locations and the rest don't significantly affect the
course of the game. Still, playing with mindcrafters for the first time was
entertaining.

I'd always heard that mindcrafters are the most effective class for clearing
a (non-undead) greater vault, so naturally I didn't come across a single
greater vault in this playthrough. The best chance I had to play with mental
waves was in the fifth level of the blue dragon caves, and even that didn't
really live up to my expectations - partly because it takes so long for one
wave to finish its animation (boring!). Still, I was surprised by how greater
telekinetic blast works, and the flexibility it provides in targetting makes
it my favorite offensive spell of all time. With it, you can essentially shoot
unnerring arrows at any monster in your sight. Even if there's an army of cats
between you and the monster, you won't hurt a whisker and your ring is safe.

Congrats, and thanks, your flg has given me some ideas for my current gnomish mindcrafters, but most of my chars have 2 points in the game where if they pass, they only die for a retarded reasons:
If I make it to dwarftown, I'm good till:
Tower of Eternal Flames....I've lost almost as many chars here than at beginning of game.

Oh, and what are all the book-casting talents, can someone give me a list, cuz I want to make a really beastly gnomish mindcrafter, dunno if it would be possible to make a gnomish mindcrafter the ultimate char(well, if they could bookcast wish, they'd be an archmage,so they'd be like a wizard and a mindcrafter)

The guidebook has a good map of all the talents and prerequisites.

If you want a decent chance of bookcasting wish on a mindcrafter, you'd want at least 100 points of learning in that spell, which would be very hard to get. You'd need to get 100 points from wands/potions of wonder or successfully read the book without it disappearing (which would be very tough as a mindcrafter). Either way, you need to find the book somewhere.

I don't think I've ever lost a good character in the Tower of Eternal Flames. My equipment at that point is generally good enough to melee everything but the wyrm, which I shoot dragon slaying ammo at, with a ring of ice or throwaway bows. You could try using drakelings; being three times as fast as everything else makes the tower very easy. Bring some spenseweeds if you don't have fire immunity and regeneration.

Well, I'm going to make a huge effort in making my next win with gnomish mindcrafter, and I can see using potions/wands of wonder to get enough spell to reasonably cast wish, or just scum blue dragon caves and just wish for tons of power.

The ToEF is my 2nd most hated place, first is the air temple, I hate taking all the time dropping everything, takes at least 20 minutes by that point in game, and without resistance, heavy damage can occur....it's the same as the tower in my opinion: it may prove difficult, so you want the best stuff with you(crowns of regen, even though it's iron), but if you aren't immune or have rings of ice, it can be hell above the ground.

My current mindcrafter is going to get healing soon, then kill Hotzenplotz, go to Puppy Cave and get exp, and hopefully altar to get 2 precrowns if on cavernous level. I got 3 precrowns once on PC:5, very easy when chaotic or lawful.

oh....boy, it'll take me forever to learn the use of every command......and I've been playin for a year now too.....

well, made new gnomish mindcrafter, found a adamantanium scimitar in Puppy Cave, after healing, very nice, and bought large shield, first time I ever used haggling.

Mindcrafters practically rape everything that's not undead or chaos, provided you have enough power points that is. Though fort the first time ever I accidentally used mindcraft on an undead: I thought that the damage that the manual stated was minor, but no, I accidentally attempted to use mind blast on a wight, and I lost 31 out of my 62 HP...and a mimic was right near me to boot.Luckily teleportitis from a pixie corpse kicked in:D

Before that though, I spent 3 days trapped in the ant level, had to tame several, music skill is useful bugs and stupid animals. I think that if I am able to get sword of nonnak, this char will kick some serious butt.
"You try to give Fang, the large dog the bone. Fang, the large dog says,"Do you know who I am, mortal?!?!"
My smartest dog ever:D
