YAVP! + YASD!

So here was the Emerald Trr retirement plan:
Step1: Get my own store and setup business.
Step2: Recieve the blessing and gift of my chosen God.
Step3: Secure store, leaving very very large pile of stuff there somewhere safe to come back to.
Step4: Visit druid, find unicorn glades, become less corrupt.
Step5: Leave chain to go and find my family, then bring them back to my nice new shop, create department store, maybe even extend the place, but in a restaraunt/pub etc.

As a merchant, just selling stuff in other peoples shops wasn't really Trr's style. Trr had felt very jealous of all the different shop keepers he had passed by, and having closed the gate, and styled himself Emerald Trr, he felt it was time to get a really good shop all for himself. Naturally, his merchant greed meant Emerald Trr wanted the very best shop he could get, so only the Casino Shoppe would do.

So off Trr goes to the Casino, for some reason picks everything up - force of habit I suppose - and backstabs the Shopkeeper.

So far so good. Trr continues stabbing, the shopkeeper runs away, and lots of thugs and stuff are killed. The shopkeeper is hunted down and killed... UNfortunately for Trr, he couldn't just put everything back into the shop, fix the door, and leave, as a/ he might need some equipment for unicorn quests, and more importantly, b/ there were various potential customers wandering around the shop. Obviously killing them all would be bad for future business, so Trr decides to make a store room in the shop, put his stock there, stand a breeder on top of the loot, and lock all the doors...

So, Trr returns to level below casino, where he knows he can find a neutral altar. All during his adventure, he was unsure where his morals really lay, and was concerned that his instinct for neutrality was going to clash with his instict for shop ownership, and sure enough, taking out the shopkeeper lead to a huge drop in alignment, so he was glad in the end he had postponed this moment so long - having gone from N+ to NC, he was still ok to get sack some gold and become N= and then get crowned, but it might have been worse, and he didnt ever want to be a fallen champion. Of course, if his amulet of order had not been destroyed so early on, he could have got crowned, gone to NL and then killed the shopkeeper, but that was never an option, most of the game he was N-... <<do you get a lawful boost for closing the gate?>>

Whilst Trr is recieving his blessing and gift (some boots), he notices some popping sounds, so he heads to the room next door and steals a white worm whom he then leads up into his shop, and makes a store room on the top wall, where he leaves worm for safe keeping. He then decides to head back downstairs to sort all his stuff out, as he can lock the room down there and use as much space as he needs, without having to worry about his future customers... At this point, he has a huge amount of stuff and gold, and can only carry it with the aid of a Girdle of Greed... His plan is to only take home the very very best of his equipment, and leave the rest in the shop, along with all the money, partially so that it is safe for the future, when even if he doesnt return, he hopes one day his son will come to the chain and become more famous than John Lewis, Mr Harrod, and
even Lord Sainsbury, but also because he doesnt want to die getting crushed by his luggage on the way home in a chance heat/acid/shock encounter - that would be silly.

So, he sorts out everything heavy/non-magical into one very very big pile and one fairly small pile, all the time still carrying his gold and wearing his Girdle of Greed, and wondering whether he should also sort all the food, potions, books, wands and rings. He then puts down the gold in the same place as his most precious treasure, carefully takes off the amulet, and checks he can carry the small pile plus his magical stuff collection. No problem. He puts the small pile down again, and leaves it in the corner for now. Intending to returns to his big pile by the stairs, which he wants to take up to his store room, he remembers he will need to pick up the money first before picking up his stock. So he picks up the money, and is immediately crushed to death under the weight of the money. His girdle is still in his backpack, and he his dead.

Now, I am not one to complain normally, but this seems a bit harsh - when picking up stuff, its impossible after becoming overburdened to pick up anymore, but with gold, I was asked twice to pick up the gold (which would have happened anyway had I been wearing the girdle, as I would need lots of gold to be able to pick up the gold), and presumably went straight from overburdened to crushed!. Now if I had been wearing the girdle and carelessly got it destroyed, fair enough, but this? Ouch. I so suck at ADOM :))

And so endeth the days of Emerald Trr. His story may well go down in the erm, annals of this laptop as surely the greatest trollish merchant to never create a chain store in the Chain. His truly heroic deeds should not be forgotten, in bringing peace from chaos he truly did the Chain great service, but in the end, and perhaps fittingly, greed and avarice were the better of him.

Learnings (not very original):

1/ Trolls suck: Leveling up is just utterly tedious.
2/ Merchants suck: Leveling up is pointless, because none of your special powers are any good.
3/ Trollish Merchants born under Salamander suck: Was not able to use fire magic obviously, nor did I start neutral. Was sorely tempted to go for concentration before 7LBs or my AoLS, had I ever got a wish, as there was a book shop somewhere, but it wasn't to be.
4/ The emerald dagger rocks unbelievably: Even a trollish merchant can win eventually with this dagger, it just takes patience.
5/ The SoCRs from the library/minstrel and the one from the HMV are enough to close gate on Day 317, when coupled with the PoCC from the druid. Inescapable conclusion: Corruption as serious problem is over-rated IF you are going for a normal ending and IF you avoid the one corruption you really don't want. 90 days, 180 days, who cares?
6/ Avoiding two corruptions you really don't want is a luxury available only to those who get lucky with the Elder dwarf guy, or save Khelly, or brave the bug temple.
7/ Even when being careful not to screw up with your money and your Girdle of Greed, it is very easy to screw up with your money and your Girdle of Greed. Never again shall I use a GoGreed unless I have a spare AoLs (which should give me one turn

to de-screw-up things) to wear at the same time (NB: there is of course one AoLS (random drop on D50) in the pile of stuff at my feet, next to my other necklaces **sigh**).
8/ The emerald dagger rocks unbelievably: Even a trollish merchant can win eventually with this dagger, it just takes patience.

Ha ha, did I manage to kill off this thread by embarassing everyone so badly with my own stupidity no one wanted to comment? Go on, slag off my girdle handling skills a little...

On another note, flg failed to tell me how many times I had saved (shitloads due to pulse-like playing still), but pointed out I had one twice. Seems bit over top.

Bedlam in the DD:

Life in the Druid's Dungeoun, by definition really, is pretty chaotic, but this was insane:

Nila Ass, high elven archer adventurer extraordinaire, drops through the floor of DD7 into the basement level:

You feel a dark and sinister presence. You feel a surge of power.

"Uh oh."

Nila [t]argets all the animals around him, but none are named [1]. Dispatching them with his mithril spear, he glances at his missiles - his largest stack of ammo is in the slot. Exiting the room leads quickly to a junction.
Looking to the south, Nila can see a room with no less than three cute little kitties, and some spiders. The door is too far away to secure without a fight, so moving swiftly on down the western corridor, passing another intersecting corridor, he enters another room. Something attacks his mind.

"Yuurgh, I feel so violated."

Feeling rather disgusted, Nila decides to retreat. Moving into the southern corridor, and peeking around the corner, a swarm of Spiders blocks his path.

"Hmmmm. Better the devil you know..."

A handy door tucks the swarm out of sight, and Nila moves back into the main corridor, to confront the corrupted one. Heading west into the room he first felt the crawling pain in his mind, he sees a black-clad druid with a strange gleam in his eye...

"Hi, pleased to meet you, you must be Keethrax, right?"
*mumble mutter frthplick grr*

Stepping neatly aside as a barrage of glowing balls heads towards him, Nila sighs.

"Huughh."
*grumble blumble fumble tumble*

Darkness surrounds the Druid, and something silvery whizzes past Nila's ear.
Checking his backback, he confirms the fact that he has not had time to find a light source, and steps back into the corridor.

"Ummm."

The wrath of battle grows inside Nila, and his beserking nature shines through.
Then, a strange feeling of self doubt creeps through his blood thirsty mind.

"Gaaaa, lets get the little &^%*, whilst we tiptoe backwards away. WTF???"

Continuing to back down the corridor, twitching, Nila reaches the junction again. A check south reveals a spider approaching,despite the previously closed door.

*twang*

The spider drops dead, and to the west, Keethrax appears from out his fog of Darkness. Another Spider rounds the corner to the South.

"Now *give* might *me* be *blood* time *blood* to *I* check *need* what *to* lies *see* to *red* the *rivers* North..."

Firing a shot at Keethrax, Nila heads north, rounds another corner, and sees some spiders. Suspicion is growing in his mind that some flavour of summoner is responsible for the crazy feeling of surging power in his groin.

"Fwoaargh!"

Realising enough is enough, Nila decides to kill Keethrax before he Darkens the entire level, and heads back to the junction. Unfortunately, one of the cute kitties from the south eastern room has found their way to the party. Spiders north, spiders south, kitty east, Keethrax west. This tempers his blood rage somewhat, and leaves him feeling rather defensive.

Keethrax hits the ground, and only a single dose of poison is flowing through Nila's veins. Heading towards the warm corpse, he picks up the loot therein. The first to follow him is the damn cat, which seems to have avoided Keethrax's multpiple attacks with as much disdain as he had.

"Gah!"

A room of darkness lies in front of him, and a cat behind... Running through the darkness, he arrives at another corridor. The cat is no longer behind him. To his complete lack of suprise, some spiders are awaiting him though... After laying waste to 7 or 8 of the foul poisonous beasts, yet another dark figure approaches. It is David Bowie[2], the named Dark Elven Wizard.

"Let me guess, you don't want to be friends either?"
*So where were the Spiders?**Ziggy played guitar**The band were altogether**and it was alright*
"Wow, thats really quite out of sight" says Nila, as Bowie manages to summon Spiders from Mars 4 times before the end of his turn. As if to taunt poor Nila further, the cat which really had been out of sight steps out of the darkness and is once again scratching at his favourite, namesake body part.

"Thank goodness my family name isnt ..."

Ignoring the cat as best as he can, Nila slashes through the spiders with his spear, and eventually comes face to face again with Bowie. By this time, the cat has successfully risen his shield skill to its current possible maximum level of 5.

*twang twang twang twang*

Bowie retreats, but manages to summmon some more bloody spiders. This is too much for poor Nila, beserk blood lust fills his mind again.

*twang twang twang twang*

The spiders continue to fall.

*twang*

*meow whimper* *keening death toll*
"Bugger bugger &^%& "^*%$ L$^%$"

Finally no more Spiders stand between Nila and Bowie. Still grieving for the lost kitty, and truly enraged at his own careless beserkerness, Nila delivers his coup de grace.

Raiding Bowies corpse, Nila finds some iron gauntlets.

"hmm, very fetching. Damn I feel feisty and strong in these. Fwoargh!"

Checking around him, Nila recalls the other two kitties he saw in the first room, and doing his best to avoid patches of darkness, and slaying the 10s of spiders still scattered around the level, he heads back to the stairs. Climbing back up into DD7, Nila Ass pauses for a while to reflect on the madness he left below, shakes his head, and moves on up to fight another day.

[1] For the sake of simplicity, bears, bats, and random dumb @$$ kobalds will be omitted from this point on. There _were_ a _few_ non-cat non-spider non-named monsters lying around, but they were nothing special.

[2] OK, I admit, I cant remember his real name. It was Muibloy-Gtrang, or Muad Dib, or something

I'm playing a super tank lvl50 female human archer named adf. The char got lucky and when wished for alchemy the poga recipe was potions of longevity and ultra healing!

so currently my weapons of choise are twin daggers(sting +needle) 270/269 to hit and 3d4+144 dmg both hands!! missile +214 to hit and damage 1d6+100, bow skill at 15 daggers at 13
but what is even more impressive are the stats
(with master cat and bracers of war and water orb and, of course, crown of science)

dv/pv(berserk) 69/62 speed 236 without boost and i'm going for ule. I'm at the library at the time writing.

My Current character is a gnomish elementalist, lvl 17. (His name is PASKA, that means shit in finnish :p [And yeah, had a long bad season in ADOM so the names turned out rather un-interesting]) Finished dwarven quests, done pyramid, gonna complete few easy ones soon (Hotzenplotz, old barbarian's quest). Precrowned with Nature's companion (which actually saved my ass once - I discovered a room full of lightning vortices on Ogre Cave).

Stats are nothing too special, quite well-balanced around 20. Got some herbs, so going to work with them some more.

My current char is Daf the female drakish ranger, with whom i made the test for stat scumming in bug ruins. The interesting name came to mind after i had managed to kill about 30 chars with same race/class before i got to lvl 15(after ten i tend make up names by just hitting the keybord with my hand).

She is non cheat, though starvation scummed so her stats at lvl 20 are somewhat interestin
st:36 wi:18 le:28 Dx: 76 To:22 and the rest something un interesting

I've already acclaimed the ring of high kings, and AoLS for the sage. I'm few weeks from darknight and i've already done the ratling quest. At the moment i'm kicking ass in the id, waiting for a few magic mapping scrolls to appear and then going for the minotaur axe. With the high stats, i'm currently using a bloody and a crystal dagger. To hit approximately 100 in both hands and to damage somewhere 'round 50. Not bad for a lvl 20 char!

EDIT: and her speed is ~200 :D I'd say that currently it's not possible to face something that could kill her.

Oh and the reason for using dual wielded daggers over the rune trident; I get 3-6 attacks per enemy turn, depending on the enemy's speed. So in theory it's possible to deal 300 damage per enemy turn, even if enemy had 40 PV i'd still deal 60 per turn, since i have high to hit modifier almost every hit sent gets delivered :D

I lost my character for a bug-crash. Fortunately I had a backup, couple quests before, but anyway...

This crash has happened to me before:
I am in dwarftown, I go to the altar and drop everything through : - +drop everything. THen the game will crash.

So, soon I will be in the same point as earlier on. :)

use instead ':' then 'd' then '$'

That command doesn't drop all items,
but instead drops all unidentified
items. This will stop those types
of crashes.
Put me in the 'fool filter', where I belong!

to id then. run up and down levels 30-40 and you're bound to find lots of interesting stuff. This should be done with cursed/doomed char for super huge mounts of out of depth monsters(titans gm:s hopefully not balors) and tension/threat rooms.

I did run ID, and it turned out to be too dangerous. A mimic hivemind...
But I find it bit weird: "Suddenly a mimic hivemind attacks you! You block the mimic hivemind. The mimic hivemind hits you. You suddenly can't move! You die..."
Does that mean that he one-hit killed me? :P He had around 250 hitpoints.

A goblin is just as likely to drop a AoLS as a titan. A lower level character might prefer to hunt for items in the cavern levels of the High Kings dungeon rather than the dangerous and highly corrupting depths of the ID. Rember to pickpocket lots - you can get plenty of nice things that way. If you have any potions of exchange then bless them and dip stacks of rings into them on level 8 of the CoC for a chance of some handy RoDSes.
Waldenbrook, the dwarven shopkeeper, mumbles: "I'd offer 9 gold pieces for yer dwarven child corpse."

woohoo played a bit today and now i've killed the ACW(was super easy), minotaur emperor and i'm in the library waiting for some time to pass to get hold of some 5 chaos resistance scrolls and to kill keriax(fourweek going day 54). The char is a tank and i can just run through the CoC for every orb and waador quest and as a nice bonus: no cats killed yet. I've basically won already.
All skills over 30, strength 60 dex 86 and lvl 24
Damage 3d20 +118 with twohanded weapons skill at 1 :D hail to the minotaur axe.

wise to have stats something like:

>All (stats) over 30, strength 60
>dex 86 and lvl 24. Damage 3d20 +118

not to mention intrinsic speed at
~200. If you don't have this you
are probably inviting death to
your PC.

Regarding the mimic: they are
quite capable of killing you,
no problem. They are one of the
big dangers of the ID, because
they can be generated right next
to you and kill you in one hit.

For this reason your tactics
should be set to coward when
stair climbing. If you can live
through thier first hit, you
can read a scroll of darkness
or use a crystal. They are easy
to kill in the dark.

I was actually a bit wrong. You'll only need to go to lvl 24 to get rods. This danger level is somewhat easy to tolerate. Just avoid berserker emperors living walls and mimics. None of them are able to see invisible, so a potion/ring/cloak/intrisic is a good way for not to get killed.

ALWAYS remember: There is NO "basically won already" in adom - like I just experienced myself X|. I was standing right before the gate - ready to enter for ultra chaos god ending. Unbelievable powerful (Level 50 was like cutting through a goblin tension room and some 13 socr's still left) - Andor would have fallen maybe by turn 5.
Last thing left: getting extremly corrupted...
no problem - I will just read a little in the black tome of alsophocus...

Ouch! Nasty. Its a ULE for me!

My high-elven barbarian is wondering what to do about lack of slaying ammo espcially dragon slaying to deal with Keriax (stone circle dagon) and demon-slaying ammo to further contemplate slaying GM's in the barbarian's glade. Should I take my Eternium two-handed sword or death's blade, the rotten crowning gift, or the emerald dagger, or the rune-covered trident to the animated forest? Should I stick to the big room? Should I go to the ID? Where can slaying ammo be found? How hard is a diamond golem compared to, say, a greater moloch? Of course, the rune-covered trident slays greater molochs (but I have no demon-slaying ammo), so I used a phase dagger on the diamond golem I killed.

AND - what kind of IRON RATION weights as much as an iron shield?! A dinner for four, oven included? ;)"

my orc paladin got all dwarftown against her just for one exploding spellbook.

looking back that was a perfect time:
darven quests- done except graveyard
dwarven mystic visited, SoCR gained
demented ratling one level up
smith one level down
stat trainer so far non hostile and i do not plan to make fight on dwarftown level anyway.

Nice turn of events, except i lost the shop with bad prices:)

I have a high elven wizard who, after a bit of magic missile zapping and retreating into the wilderness, and a lot of running after a panicing blue guy, finally managed to get the Sheriff as a first kill. I am still not sure why, I was just bored with usual start I suppose.

What I don't understand though - how come Terinyo isn't pissed off at me? If I zap a wee child, the gongs go off and the thugs come running, but I can chase the Sheriff all over the town, and as long as I only zap him, its fine.

Seems a bit strange. Now I am wondering who to try and kill next. Are there any other NPCs who wont set off the gong I wonder....

noob: Did you know that the casino guards paralyze? I didn't :D. But i do now! Luckily i had already killed the big guard and the gift shop guy(and some 20 eternal guardians), so i was left with astonishing 3 hp, probably the first time i was being lucky in adom.

Argh, I was playing adom yesterday and trying to beat game without stopping or saving and I died at level 40 due to a lightning storm.

My current character is a dwarven weaponsmith, lvl 21.

Done water temple, now just looking for a ring of ice to clear ToEF and get forwards...


Game time passed147 days, 13 hours, 9 minutes and 6 seconds (Yeah, I'm very slow in the game and spend way too much time in the wilderness + I just recently found 7LB).

Khelly saved, lil water dragon made happy, practicly done everything except ToEF. Maybe I could spend sime time training stats, they aren't too good.

Maybe you can do it without...
I rarely use ice rings in the tower myself. Can't understand why some people waste a wish on them. Fireproof blankets (blessed) work just fine for backpack stuff (as long as you carry little). Your rings are protected by gloves (elemental gauntlets). And you probably have enough neat higher metal equipment / artifacts to wear. Better put on a ring of mental stability instead. (wouldn't trust the ice ring with 7lbs anyway)

I agree completely with noob. I don't recall
the last time I used a ring of ice in the tower.
I suppose if a PC plans to rely on 7LB's or
dragon/demon slaying ammo, it might be worth
a wish, but not otherwise.
One RoI only gives ~95% protection, two blessed
rings give +99%. But that uses up both ring slots!

Put me in the 'fool filter', where I belong!

At least the last three times I did the ToEF I didn't have a ring of ice.. But maybe a wizard or a barbarian with Vanquisher have an easier time there than, say, an archer :)

Hey, I just noticed, you're a dwarven weaponsmith! Just smith up all non-iron gear and go whoop some ass. Remember that throwing potions and zapping wands might be very useful when fighting the wyrm.
