I agree with Darren Grey - try to keep it in moderation. There's nothing wrong with being careful and using ways to buff up the community char, but don't overdo it. The others want to play, too!

Casino gold is very obvisously part of the game. Why else put 100 cash-machines on that level?

"Apply for the Roman Republic Game!
(So-called until I find a better name)"
I think the name is fine. But if you want another, you might use just be the self-explanatory "ADOM succession game".

From what I see on Civ fanatics forum, every player can post a report of what he has done.(Taking special care to report the last few turns very carefully. Like, you are on DH:1, and I was running West from a greater moloch....good to know) And then the next player has 12 hours to say "Got it" or "playing" or something, and 24 hours to play it finished and send the game and write the report. Of course he might appeal to the Forum for guidance or outline his general idea of what he might do, but of course as consul/tribune he has absolute dictatorical powers for his set. But just mabye, since players want to win, listening to the community and at least appearing to play smart is good for one's standing in the republic...

Each should (since we are sent savefile which will remain after we load up the game) take a roman oath to never reload bad situations from the save, except those caused by power-failures or game crashes.

It will be interesting to see how other people play this out. Early death = next player starts up a new random char and plays it?

Sounds like a good idea to me, Molach. It's probably going to take some time until we, as a community, become good enough to actually win.

I'm going to create the the game thread now.

Yes, the 'no save scumming' goes without
saying. If I'm the unfortunate sucker
who kills our PC, I'll take my lumps
like a man.

Personally, I am quite optomistic for
this community character. Yes, even our
very first one. Most of the game isn't
life threatening, there aren't TOO many
unfair deaths, if one is careful. I
also think we have some pretty experienced
players in this bunch, to handle the few
really dangerous moments.

The only big threat is the RNG, and
let's face it, after the christmas
meatgrinder-I mean challenge, it OWES
us!

Darren:
I generated a few PC's, my best was a
troll druid, who got to level 12 by
1000 on the turn counter. A bit harder
than what I was expecting.

Crap on a stick. It was a female gray elven merchant.

It would be mighty pointless to try and rival Ireth Oronar's success!

FLING THE BLING REVISITED!
Just joking : )
I say we keep the lass. My humble
reccomendations for starting talents
are alertness, good shot, and keen
shot. I think we could have done a
lot worse here.

With the right starting talents, we
should have about 13 damage on our
coin throw. That should be quite
enough to see us through the early
game. Once we get a few exp. levels,
and join the thieves guild, we can
likely afford a few PV points, from
the black market.

Shall we consider slaying the old
barbarian, for quick exp. points. In
my experience, merchants become MUCH
more powerful, upon reaching exp.
level 10.

Their coin throw range goes from 3 to
five, which is more important than it
might first appear. Due to the energy
cost for coin throw being 1200, a 3
square range means you often get only
one shot at an enemy, before they come
to stand right next to you. With a 5
square range, you can get 4 shots, quite
a difference.

Just remember, humanoids are very likely
to pick up gold coins, so being a litter
bug before a big fight might be a good
idea. Early-game strength training with
large rations, is also a possibility. It
will take thousands of turns, thus
spanning at least 2 players turns though.
It will also consume ~10 days of game
time.

How worried are we about the 90 day
limit? How concerned are we with saving
Khelly? I normally just kill the sage,
but for this game I don't think we should.
If we plan to save Khelly, I say let's
not worry about the 90 day limit.
Put me in the 'fool filter', where I belong!

Worst player... ever, I think the consensus is that you should choose Alert so we can all get Treasure Hunter. Apart from that, you can do whatever you think is best. Don't feel obligated to follow gut's and Soirana's hints to the letter, as valuable and helpful they are. They have already started disagreeing with each other anyway...

We still didn't agree on a name. Isn't that high prority, too?

It is not 'we', it is 'I'. Kill everyone you like or don't like. Main goal, I would think, is to advance the character. Whether you take the chaotic way or the lawful way is up to you. If I take over a character that is in the midst of training strength by strained, and I don't like to carry that much, then I throw it all away in some deep abyss (I will, of course, make the location of the abyss known). I, for one, am a huge fan of corruptions.

See, that's what I was talking about. The perfect mindset!

Caligula is somewhat fine, only he wasn't a consul or something, but an emperor with absolute power. We could call our character "Rome", because we are its rulers and it's up to us to fuck it up or bring our community char to glory.

for a name:

Gaius Marius

you can google about him. he was a consul (7 times). And was considered as mentally ill in the end of his life.
Also put efforts on military work. On other hand he has nothing in common with gray elf merchant. especially female.
so that is just my own 0,02.

Name is irrelevant - we just need one. As it turns out our hero is a heroine then the so far suggested names become... inapplicable. Since there were no female consuls in Rome the only Roman name I figure could be applicable would be Rhea or Silvia (Rhea Silvia was the mother of Romulus and Remus, founders of the Republic). A default name would make matters easy for selection. However, ultimately this choice goes to Worst Player... ever since he's starting things. After all, there needn't be any democracy on this - as first consul he gets the choice. [EDIT: Didn't see Silfir's post before - Maria's a nice name too, and sounds fitting - I'm all for that as an option.]

gut: Trolls are indeed best, though elementalists can have an easy time. I think it should be clear from that test that not much can be done in just 1k turns.

I'm personally against using the old barbarian for easy levels - seems scummy to me. However, it's up to whoever plays to decide if they'll do that or not.

90 day limit is likely something we can't all worry about. Saving Khelly is a matter of circumstance, though is obviously preferred.

I like Rhea, too... I'll go with that if no-one minds. It's kind of fitting because this is the mother of the Roman Republic Characters.

For talents I went with Alert, Good Shot, and Long Stride. That extra foot speed will likely be a life saver to someone at some point... I believe Long Stride gives more foot speed than Quick does, even though quick helps in other ways.

I'm not intending to do anything fancy... I'll find the quest givers in Terinyo and talk to them, then head to the Village dungeon and try and make it as far as Jherod at least.

We could have done worse, I think. If we have to play a merchant, this is a good one. Even her strength isn't THAT bad. I won't burden myself down with food to get strength unless I go up a couple of levels and can take a hit or two.

Anyway, here goes...

Gee, Toughnes of 8, tree born, ring specialized... that is sort of challenge.

the only good thing is PV on clothes.

and do all us a favor put ring of damage on right finger. and probably ring of luck on left.

And speaking of quest givers... i wouldn't speak with sheriff. least thing you want is to meet Kranach gang.

So is Narcolepsy next then? Please give us a full kill list when you start so we have an idea of what the first kill must be.

Well done not getting her killed off the bat, WPe ;) Clothes are a nice start, and it's good we got an okay shield straight away. Don't get too depressed, Soirana, you'll get your chance to improve our little girl soon enough :P

Thinking ahead for Talents: the Quick line would be helpful, as would many of the missile ones. I'm not a huge fan of Missile Weapon Master (not worth 4 talents IMO) but if people decide to go for that remember that Boomerangs doesn't count - Bows, Crossbows and Slings would be the best three prereqs to choose. Porter talents are of less use to a Merchant. I'd rate all of the DV talents fairly highly (total of 14 DV from 7 talents). Mighty Strike is great if we find an appropriate weapon. Any other opinions?

A great start, I think. I wonder what
is wrong with wearing a girdle of wieght?
Does it do something negative, that I
am unaware of? I think it's a good idea
to wear one. If a PC hits an acid trap,
hopefully the girdle will disolve instead
of those nice clothes.

I am ecstatic, that we don't know for sure
what the first kill was. If we are not
striving for an ultra (which I at least,
am not), the only thing the first kill
is good for, is the ~courage~ skill. I care
little for that, and will now most likely
kill the old dodger, for the exp. If our
missile damage is 1d2 +14 or above.

Ack! Is that what that is? All I knew is that it was an unknown girdle that wasn't cursed. But Gut might be right.. even that might have a use.

I sent the file to Narcolepsy. Primarily I'm glad I'm not dead... how anticlimatic would that have been? :)

For what it's worth, I'd like to see Rhea's talents either go towards quickness or missiles. I think if something is strong enough to make every point of DV count, then it's probably strong enough to be run away from. But you guys have a *much* better idea of what is needed in the late game than I do.

Kind of feel like I'm getting mixed messages

other things instead.

I had to change my email address, either

Everyone should have a self-centred mindset - Silfir is just doing the same, gut. You don't have to listen to him - none of us have to listen to each other at all. Except me of course - you must all obey what I say cause I'm the most important ;P

Nice going with your round, Narcolepsy. Getting shield skill maxed is great, and 40 DV on Coward is quite respectable early on. Don't think the Yergius quest has been requested yet though, so we'll have to do some more pick pocketing later. Blessed ring of damage should help a lot with the coin-tossing.
