Well it's not vital intel, and this is a republic so I will say what I want. Complaining about it wont make you forget it and you normally would know you are very close to joining anyway due to the fact that you know you have already picked many pockets, as I did. This information is lossed unless conveyed somehow. Sure this intel is more acurate than a feeling, but the result is practiaclly the same. Yes I got healing (figured mentioning the saving of Yriggs implied as such) and the water was indeed identified based on detect item status, as was the ring seeing as how I said it was cursed.

You really shouldn't use the save games for anything else but safekeeping. Otherwise we'll have a problem drawing the line.

I cared so much, for an exp. level 11 PC.
Stupid ghul damaged our armor with that one. Grrr!

After reading Darren's post, I am quite
encouraged. We now have poison resistance, a way
to deal with high PV monsters, more luck, and
enough piety for many prayers. I really think we
have a good chance to win with this PC.

On my post, I realize I stated that I had ID'd
our inventory. What I actually did, was to get
the blessed/cursed status of it, by means of the alter.

Only close call I had was when an ice vortex hit me as I turned a corner - took me down to 13 hp. But that quickly healed, and other monsters seem quite unable to harm her at this stage. She has decent DV/PV, and kills most monsters without any trouble. Was hoping I could get her a good precrowning artifact, but saccing took a lot longer than I expected. With some herbs to up her toughness (still 9 at present) she'll become very powerful indeed. Learning's quite low too - good thing we have Gemology.

Could do with geting some arrows for her, since she has a nice short bow now, and it's about time she moved on from coin-throwing. Need to save up enough money for detect traps too - I'm not fond of doing the pyramid or dwarven graveyard without it.

It's funny to think that one of gut's characters would be almost halfway through the game now :P

Oh, and reflecting a little on the IDed equipment... We have a waterproof blanket now - quite handy. We also have potions of invisibility to get us out of tricky situations, and a potion of extra healing to recover from one. The wands of webbing can come in useful too. I've just realised that we're wearing a ring of stun resistance, but the padded armour already provides that - best to swap it for a ring of luck at this point.

A blessed scroll of uncursing should be read at some point before we go for a precrowning (should we walk that path). Some cursed items lying next to the altar (such as the chain mail) should be picked up before this is performed. We only have 2 holy waters at present though. We still don't have teleportation control, as far as I'm aware. Getting it would involve killing blink dogs, pulling our alignment down, so it might be best to go for a precrown before having to switch alignment again. Luring monsters up from PC5 turned out to be quite inefficient (mostly because the stairs are positioned a bit out of the way). It may be easier just using the monsters generated on PC4, though it would still take a while.

I'm a bit sleepy, but why is it good to read a scroll of uncursing before precrowning?

Your god won't precrown you if you're wearing cursed items. He'll possibly uncurse your equipment actually, at the cost of a little piety, allowing you to sac a bit more and get the precrown. But, well, we have scrolls of uncursing anyway - might as well put them to use.

I. Had. No. Idea. I actually meant to ask the forum a couple of weeks ago about my apparent lack of precrowning despite everything being in order and ready to go. Several times I experienced this and I thought it had to be an artifact I had missed.

I'd advise against that as the cost of uncursing is roughly equivalent to about 2 sacced monsters. It would be smarter to save the scrolls.

Uncursing scrolls are very common, and we have 4 as is. A blessed scroll will uncurse the whole inventory, which is quite handy as things are. We don't have much holy water though, so praying for uncursing may be a better option.

As for things that stop precrownings, it's quite possible that it was just missed artifacts, or perhaps you hadn't sacced enough. Another biggie is items that curse or doom you - Executor for instance. Quite often I'll wield a weapon of damnation when livesaccing to increase monster generation, and it's important to remember to remove it before praying for the precrown. However in this instance you get a message on the lines of "You sense a stain on your relationship with your deity."

That's a good point about moving on from coin
throwing. A merchant gets no skill marks, for
blinging. About blink dog corpses, if one has
the patience to consistantly shoot missiles past
the dogs, it should minimize the alignment hit.
With no Food Preservation though, one might still
have to kill so many BD's that alignment change
is unavoidable.

I just read the last report. It's pretty good to
have found a shield that nice, while still in
the PC.

I've never been a fan of throwing money away, anyway. I used only melee weapon my turn and I am a little curious: I have never paid much attention to damage in the game, but melee damage on this character was 1d8+5 with a ring of damage. When I took of the ring of damage her damage was 1d8+2 even though her weapon was 1d8+5. How come?

Dunno what this +dam is all about. With ring& sword off we have 1d3+1 damage at normal (+0+0) tactic.

Wielding spear(+5) makes 1d8+7 because of (+1) from polearm skill bonus.

Add blessed ring of damage and we are 1d8+13.

My favourite tactic is very agressive (+8+3).

So 1d8 +16dam. No worry.

I see we became Neutral. I deem we have not enough food for a neutral precrown, and besides saccing will draw us to N= giving a regular crowning. And it takes LONGer to livesac at a neutral altar. So I will head to CoC upper levels and see what is there.

Oh man! Can't believe we lost all that piety... Ah well, I gues mistakes like that are easy when swapping these save files round (I certainly make dumber mistakes when loading up my own chars). The new shield is damned nice - should last us a long time.

As for the damage stuff, I gave a fair amount of detail of the damage output in the log file I posted to the screenshot thread. We're doing plenty damage for this stage of the game, and with the shiny broadsword we can do even better.

> someone should fetch cursed stethoscope from
> mad doctor.

Yeah, before I kill him. Just joking, he's not
worth enough exp. points to bother with.

I have observed some things about rings of damage.
First, I think they give a % increase, based on
current damage output (strength?). In other words,
that +6 that we are getting right now, will turn
to +9 as our damage increases. Also, not all rings
of damage are created equal. Some will stack,
while others do not. The non-stacking rings will
sometimes, but not always, yield different damage
modifiers than regular ones. They also sell for
different prices at shops.

If a blessed ring (worn on the right hand) only
provided a +3 benefit, that is a bit surprising.
It may be possible though, that we just got hold
of one of the cheap ones. The damage modifier is
six now though, perhaps we got another strength
point, or another skill level. That might have
been enough to make the difference. Or maybe it
was just coward mode.

On a side note, I have noticed a similar effect
with rings of slaying. If the ring says +6, it
will still yield +9 regardless. I don't know if
this is always true, but I can't remember ever
getting just +6 from ANY ring of slaying.

EDIT:
Just read Darren's post. We may have lost the
piety, but we will thankfully keep the 'lucky'
intrinsic. That, paired with the ring of luck,
should be enough to save us from at least a few
disasters : ) Still, fate smiling on us would
have been sweet.

I just tested an old char with rings of slaying. Some off effects... A ring that says +6 only gives +5, and a ring that says +9 only gives +8. This is after trying many combinations of items. There might be other forces at play here, but it seems quite odd...

Haha, who needs piety anyway, right... right? It was probably coward-mode, though. Maybe when the cats attacked. I have also experienced the different types of rings of damage. I also wonder about the (+3) on, for instance, tower crystal shields. They seem to be (-3) instead of (+3).

Heavier shields tend to give more of a to hit penalty. Why certain shields give a to hit bonus I don't know. There's certain random modifiers to it too of course.

Wow. That is much different than what I would
have expected.

Sulangatori:
> Haha, who needs piety anyway, right... right?

Well, you did get back to 'very close'. That
should provide at least two prayers. We shouldn't
need more than that for a while. Besides, we
would have had to switch eventually for TP control.

I probably shouldn't have converted us to L so
early, I just wanted rid of that necklace. I am
still a bit confused about why the diety didn't
turn it to dust. The only thing I can think of,
is that my piety wasn't high enough for the diety
to get angry about it.

I just read Moloch's post. I just want to say
how nice it is, playing with people who actually
pick pockets. I'm not used to all of this loot,
2 waterproof blankets! That's quite a luxury for
a player like me, who doesn't use pickpocketing.
Not to mention all of the other nice stuff. I
notice we have a scroll of item detection, that
opens the door for getting the TP wand, from the
VDDL. Only need TP control now.

Good luck SinX, and keep an eye out for yellow
dogs : )

One must remember that rings of damage and slaying modifies the Tactics skill, so that testing rings under any tactic except 'normal' will be futile. On a random character from my svgs with Tactics at 58 this happened: taking of a ring of slaying (+7, +6) while 'normal' reduce damage by 7 - taking it of while 'berserk' reduce damage by 10. Same applies to ring of damage, although it will only give 9 damage on berserk. It came to show that this ring of damage gained one damage point for every aggressive tactic mode. Another character's ring of damage showed that it gained one point going to aggressive, none going further to very aggressive and finallly an additional point when berserk - a grand total of 2 additional damage points. This guy also had Tactics at 100. The ring of slaying also gained one point for every aggressive tactic mode, and since it started at 7 it ended up at 10.

Ah, so that's the logical explanation. Tactics must have a percentile effect on damage modifiers. This is evidently influenced by the skill, and by certain starsigns. The char I was testing with was on Coward mode, which explains why the rings were causing less additional damage than usual.

Edit was pain in ass.

I am not sure whether it is enough to have Tactics at any level or if there is a line you have to cross to gain these additional damage points. Also, wearing a shield and taking of the rings one by one yielded nothing exciting. Taking off the shield yielded these results:

1) take off ring of damage first = dropped 8 dp instead of 9 dp. Then take off ring of slaying = no difference
2) take off ring of slaying first = dropped 9 dp instead of 10 dp. Then take off ring of damage = no difference.

Probably a very, very simple solution. Weight or something, I don't know, too tired to think right now.

gut: I must have misspelled something, it should say 'it least our god is very pleased now...' Hence, the ironic 'hurra'.
